Soil termites in primary forest, secondary forest and an agroforestry plantation system in central Amazonia. Infoteca-e
MARTIUS, C.; GOMES, E.; GARCIA, M. V. B..
Litter and soil termites were collected with soil cores (21cm diameter) in a primary forest site, a secondary forest site and two sites of a polyculture plantation system in central Amazonia (Brazil), in three-monthly intervals from 1997 to 1999. Termite genus diversity, abundance and biomass all were highest in the primary forest. The values in the secondary forest were half those of the primary forest, and they were lowest in the plantation systems, indicating that the latter sites may suffer from functional constraints concerning the process of organic residue decomposition.

SPATIAL VARIABILITY AND VITALITY OF EPIGEOUS TERMITE MOUNDS IN PASTURES OF MATO GROSSO DO SUL, BRAZIL Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Sandra Santana; Ceddia,Marcos Bacis; Zuchello,Fernando; Aquino,Adriana Maria de; Mercante,Fábio Martins; Alves,Bruno José Rodrigues; Urquiaga,Segundo; Martius,Christopher; Boddey,Robert Michael.
Epigeous termite mounds are frequently observed in pasture areas, but the processes regulating their population dynamics are poorly known. This study evaluated epigeous termite mounds in cultivated grasslands used as pastures, assessing their spatial distribution by means of geostatistics and evaluating their vitality. The study was conducted in the Cerrado biome in the municipality of Rio Brilhante, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In two pasture areas (Pasture 1 and Pasture 2), epigeous mounds (nests) were georeferenced and analyzed for height, circumference and vitality (inhabited or not). The area occupied by the mounds was calculated and termite specimens were collected for taxonomic identification. The spatial distribution pattern of the mounds was...

Termite assemblages in five semideciduous Atlantic Forest fragments in the northern coastland limit of the biome Rev. Bras. entomol.
Souza,Heitor Bruno de Araújo; Alves,Wagner de França; Vasconcellos,Alexandre.
Termites are abundant organisms in tropical ecosystems and strongly influence the litter decomposition and soil formation. Despite their importance, few studies about their assemblage structures have been made in Brazilian Atlantic Forest fragments, especially in the area located north of the São Francisco River. This study aims to analyze the assemblage composition of five Atlantic Forest fragments located in the northern biome limit along the Brazilian coast. A standardized sampling protocol of termites was applied in each fragment. Thirty-three termite species belonging to twenty genera and three families were found in the forest fragments. The wood-feeder group was dominant both concerning to species richness and number of encounters in all areas. In...

Termite Mounds Effects on Soil Properties in the Atlantic Forest Biome Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Sandra Santana de; Pereira,Marcos Gervasio; Pereira,Renato Nunes; Pontes,Rafael Moura de; Rossi,Celeste Queiroz.
ABSTRACT Termites have peculiar activities in the soil, inducing significant changes in the soil properties. The objective of this study was to assess physical and chemical properties and soil organic matter to evaluate the effect of termite activity and termite mounds on the soil. Two toposequences were selected and divided in slope thirds (shoulder, backslope, and footslope). In each of these, four termite mounds were selected. Samples were taken from the soils and termite mounds (top, center, and base) along with a variety of termites for identification. Analyses were carried out for physical, soil texture, and chemical properties, as well as for particle size and chemical fractioning of organic matter. The species Cornitermes cumulans was found in all...

Termites as Bioindicators of Habitat Quality in the Caatinga, Brazil: Is There Agreement Between Structural Habitat Variables and the Sampled Assemblages? Neotropical Entomology
Alves,W de F; Mota,AS; Lima,RAA de; Bellezoni,R; Vasconcellos,A.
The composition of termite assemblages was analyzed in three caatinga sites of the Estação Ecológica do Seridó, located in the municipality of Serra Negra do Norte, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. These sites have been subjected to selective logging, and cleared for pasture and farming. A standardized sampling protocol for termite assemblages (30h/person/site) was conducted between September 2007 and February 2009. At each site we measured environmental variables, such as soil pH and organic matter, necromass stock, vegetation height, stem diameter at ankle height (DAH) and the largest and the smallest crown width. Ten species of termites, belonging to eight genera and three families, were found at the three experimental sites. Four feeding...

Termites in sugar cane in Northeast Brazil: ecological aspects and pest status Neotropical Entomology
Miranda,Carmélia S.; Vasconcellos,Alexandre; Bandeira,Adelmar G..
The spatial distribution, abundance, and feeding habits of termites in a sugar cane plantation in Northeast Brazil were studied, and based on these ecological parameters, the pest status of the species was evaluated. Four species were found: Amitermes nordestinus Mélo & Fontes, Cylindrotermes nordenskioeldi Holmgren, Nasutitermes coxipoensis (Holmgren) and Syntermes nanus Constantino, which we reported by the first time in association to sugar cane. The abundance and spatial distribution (vertical and horizontal) of the termites were influenced mainly by the plant root biomass and soil organic matter. C. nordenskioeldi is harmful to sugar cane, A. nordestinus is a potential pest, while N. coxipoensis and S. nanus are not potential pests. The...

The exocrine glands of swarming females and physogastric queens of Cornitermes cumulans (Kollar) (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) Zoologia
Ignatti,Ana Cristina; Costa-Leonardo,Ana Maria.
The histological study of the exocrine glands in the swarming females showed the presence of tergal glands, mandibular glands, salivary glands and sternal glands. Tergal and sternal glands are not developed in the physogastric queens, probably, because of a regression process. The development of mandibular glands is similar in swarming females and physogastric queens.

The frontal weapon of the termite Armitermes euamignathus Silvestri (Isoptera, Termitidae, Nasutitermitinae) Zoologia
Costa-Leonardo,Ana Maria.
Frontal weapon is the term used to designate the apparatus consisting of frontal gland and associated structures that participate in the chemical defense of termite soldiers. The ultra structure of the frontal gland and the scanning microscopy of the soldier head was investigated in the termite Amiitermes euamignathus Silvestri, 1901.Campaniform sensilla was not observed but there were 80 to100 sensory bristles around the frontal pore. The glandular epithelium shows only class 1 cells according 10 the classification of NOIROT & QUENNEDEY (1974, 1991). The glandular cells are characterized by apical microvilli, a basal labyrinth and a large quantity of smooth endoplasmic reticulum which forms dense zones throughout the cytoplasm. The secretion is...
